70% of China’s jobs likely to be replaced by robots

Artificial intelligence (AI) is likely to replace about 70% of occupations in China in the future, according to a report jointly released by the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) and Sequoia China.
The study was based on a survey of the country’s 400 most common occupations.
As of the end of 2017, China had a total of 776 million employees and most of them will likely end up jobless when automation speeds up.
According to the report, 99% of workers in agriculture, fisheries and forestry, 98% of workers in construction, and 94% of workers who install and maintain power systems will be replaced by AI in 20 years.
In the manufacturing sector, the report said automation will replace one-fifth of China’s jobs by 2030, affecting up to 100 million employees if the process of automation accelerates.
However, it is worth noting that the report is based on a static analysis that fails to include new industries and new jobs in the future.
