Employee fired for gesturing obscenely at Trump
An American woman has been fired from her job for "flipping the bird" at US President Donald Trump while she was out cycling in October.
50 year-old Juli Briskman was on her bicycle near Trump’s National Golf Club in Washington DC when the presidential motorcade drove past her.
"He was passing by and my blood just started to boil," Briskman told the Huffington Post. "I'm thinking, he's at the damn golf course again."
Briskman then directed an obscene gesture at Trump – and was caught on camera by an AFP White House photographer, who was travelling with the convoy.
The photograph subsequently went viral on social media. Briskman cannot be identified by the photograph alone, as it is shows her from the back; nonetheless, she proudly displayed it on her Twitter and Facebook profiles.
But the incident, and her acknowledgement of the subsequent social media attention, seems to have backfired.
Her employers at Akima - a builder that has contracts with the US government and military – fired her just three days later.
“Basically, you cannot have 'lewd' or 'obscene' things in your social media. So they were calling flipping him off 'obscene’,” Briskman told Huffington Post.
She also alleged that the company was worried about losing government work due to the photo, even though her social media pages do not link to Akima in any way.
Briskman worked in Virginia, where employers can fire employees at any time for a variety of reasons.
