How media agency MediaCom’s HR elevates the business

Sonia Fernandes, Regional Chief Talent Officer, MediaCom, shares how her team is a key part of all major business deals.

HR strategy is a term continually used by practitioners, but what does it really mean, and why is it still important?

In a nutshell, HR strategy is the organisation’s blueprint for optimising human capital, Sonia Fernandes, Chief Talent Officer, Asia-Pacific, MediaCom, tells HRM Magazine in the latest Insights.

“Human capital is more fungible and dynamic than even financial capital. The optimisation of human capital can sometimes define how we deploy all other forms of capital,” she says.

Fernandes notes that other functions, like finance, are rarely questioned on how they can add value to their business, but HR gets asked that much more often.

“Perhaps that’s because there’s multiple contributions that they make. It’s not just keeping an eye out on profits and losses, it is also about reviewing contracts, dealing with vendors, assessing risks,” she says, adding that HR strategy is one way for the talent management function to prove its economic value.

At MediaCom, HR is well-represented across all its senior leadership levels and executive boards.

“We are involved with working with the CFO on cost optimisation, we also work with the chief client and strategy officers on pitches,” says Fernandes. 

"So we're front and center with the pitch teams, pitching for new businesses."
