One in three Singaporean millennials regret their chosen careers

Many young locals regret their choice of tertiary course, while 22.2% are unsure why they ended up in their current jobs.

Regret and confusion surround the career choices of young Singaporeans, many of whom are uncertain as to why they chose their University or Polytechnic course.

One in three (32.5%) Singapore millennials were unsure of or regretted choosing their tertiary education, while nearly one in four (22.2%) weren’t sure why they chose their current career path.

The survey of 640 Singapore-based respondents, aged 18 to 64,  was conducted by Happi, a mobile micro-survey platform, as part of its Workforce of the Future series looking into the professional challenges and expectations of young local talent.

When asked if they were given a second chance at selecting their career, and barring any external factors such as pressure from family, respondents selected the healthcare industry as their ideal sector to work in.

Healthcare attracted 18.11% respondents, while banking and finance came in second place with 13.46%, and media and entertainment took third position with 12.18% of Singapore millennials.

“The Workforce of the Future series shows that young Singaporean talent - although driven by the need to succeed - are still struggling to find their place in a professional workplace setting,” said Greg Lipper, founder of Happi.

“Although most of the respondents said they were driven by a passion for their career path and a lifelong knowledge of their desire for their chosen field, a significant number are also unsure how they ended up on the the track they did - while a small portion even chose their path due to pressure from their parents.”
