Public Transport Workers Appreciation Day launches in Singapore

In conjunction with the event, Tower Transit Singapore is launching an all-new staff welfare and engagement programme called TowerCARE.

After a hard day of navigating massive buses around Singapore's heavy traffic, Tower Transit Singapore drivers look forward to de-stressing at the company's new gym.

The professionally-equipped gym, which is located at the Bulim bus depot, is part of a suite of initiatives by the bus operator keep its 900 employees happy, healthy and engaged at work.

The staff welfare and engagement programme, called TowerCARE, launches this week in conjunction with Singapore's first Inaugural Public Transport Workers Appreciation Day. It was developed with the support of the National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU).

With TowerCARE, Tower Transit employees will be able to enjoy express massages at the operator's depot and interchanges, weekly fitness classes, health talks, and healthier options at staff canteens.

As part of the programme's launch, bus captains this morning were treated to a morning snack and coffee. Staff will also be receiving a complimentary care pack containing a shoe bag, a towel and a healthy snack and drink to encourage them to get active and use the new staff gym.

“Our business has never been about running buses. It’s always been about people – moving people and connecting them. That makes it far more complex than simply operating buses, but we believe that if we genuinely care for our staff, they will care for our passengers," said Andrew Bujtor, MD, Tower Transit Singapore.

Melvin Yong, Executive Secretary, NTWU, praised Tower Transit's efforts to look out for employee welfare.

“NTWU welcomes TowerCARE and is heartened that Tower Transit has initiated programmes to encourage its employees to stay healthy. The public transport industry is a challenging one with our workers working around the clock. The Union will continue to work closely with our tripartite partners to ensure our public transport workers are being taken care of, in terms of both physical and mental well-being," he said.

In addition to the launch of TowerCARE, Tower Transit has created a Facebook profile picture frame which the public can add to their profile photos to show their appreciation for public transport workers on Public Transport Workers’ Appreciation Day. The frame can be found by searching “Tower Transit” on the Facebook Frames search page.
