Strategic HR in the spotlight at Inter-Tertiary HR Symposium 2018

HR veterans from top organisations shared their thoughts with students at the third Inter-Tertiary HR Symposium.

This year’s Inter-Tertiary HR Symposium, themed “Strategic HR: Be Future-Proof, Be Ahead”, had a keen focus on technology and business transformation.

Organised by the Singapore Management University (SMU) Organizational Behavior and Human Resources (OBHR) Society, the third edition of the Inter-Tertiary HR Symposium was attended by over 170 Singapore-based HR students and professionals.

In her opening address, Guest-of-Honour Low Peck Kem, the Chief HR Officer at Singapore’s Public Service Division, talked about how critical it was for HR practitioners to embrace technology – by using it as a tool “to increase our bandwidth and productivity as opposed to fearing or shying away from it”.

This was followed by a panel discussion between Low; Dr. Jaclyn Lee, Senior Director, HR from the Singapore University of Technology and Design; and Nandini Jayaram, HR Business Partner at Google.

Based on their own professional experiences, the panelists shared how artificial intelligence and technology has changed the way companies hire, retain and develop talent.

Later at the event, Richard Stone, Talent and Organizational Effectiveness Lead from Mondelez International and Sebastian Tan, Chief HR Officer from Frasers Property Limited, gave a practical look into how businesses can continuously develop their people.

Capping off the symposium was the Youth Career Network Mentorship Session. Organised by Young NTUC, 15 HR industry professionals shared their learnings with aspiring HR practitioners in a round-robin mentoring showcase. Students had the opportunity to gain career advice, knowledge and expert guidance in helping them to better navigate their job search.
