Employees seek more flexibility in work and careers

While compensation is still important for employees, work flexibility and career development opportunities are increasingly being prioritised.

Employers who offer clearly defined career paths that align to employee aspirations are more likely to succeed in retaining talent, Ceridian’s 2023 Pulse of Talent report has revealed.

With the report revealing that employees are looking for flexibility in where and how they work, as well as in their careers, 84% of employees who have a clear career path say it makes them more committed to their employers.

However, only half of the 8,833 employees surveyed by Ceridian feel committed to staying with their current employer for at least three to five years. Nine in 10 employees also reported “feeling stuck” in their role over the last year, with one-third feeling that way often or always.

Susan Tohyama, CHRO, Ceridian, said, “There is an opportunity for employers to counter this trend, with their own long-term commitment to employee work/life, career flexibility, and engagement. This includes opening up opportunities for employees across an organisation, while giving them greater control about where, when, and how their job gets done to truly meet the needs of a modern workforce.”

Compensation alone is also no longer sufficient to keep employees in their job. While 55% of employees cite compensation as what they value most in a job, flexibility and work-life balance ranked a close second (49%). Particularly, respondents aged 18-24 (44%) selected flexibility as their most important job attribute, ranking it above compensation (41%).
