Vietnam posts strong employment data for 2018 year to date

Vietnam's labour force increased by more than half a million people over the first three quarters of 2018, coinciding with a slight increase to the average wage.

The number of unemployed Vietnamese went down by 1.7% while the number of labourers aged above 15 reached 55.2 million in the first nine months of the year, according to data from the country’s General Statistics Office.

The government attributed the rosy employment data to the effective administrative reform policies and the positive impacts of free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed.

In the first nine months of the year, Vietnam added 581,500 people to its labour force while its unemployment declined by about 19,600 people.

In terms of income, the General Statistics Office said the monthly income of employees in Vietnam was averaged at VND5.8 million (SG$345) during the January-September period, up by VND381,000 (SG$23) from a year earlier.

The statistics office also noted a shift in the labour structure towards reducing the labour density in the agro-forestry-fisheries sector and increasing the proportion in the industrial and services sectors.
