A recent report from Taiwan’s Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, has found that almost 2 million women in Taiwan are not working due to family reasons.
This out of a total of 5.24 million adults aged between 15 to 64, who are not in the workforce.
Some 2.04 million cited responsibilities at home as the main reason for not working, of which 1.98 were women.
Another 2.03 million are not in the workforce as they are still in school, while some 50,000 were prevented from working by old age, physical challenges, or mental challenges.
Taiwan’s working population has been steadily decreasing over the last few years, due to an ageing population. This has led to manpower shortage issues.
The Taiwanese government is now exploring policies that might encourage women to enter or return to the workforce, specifically addressing the fact that many of these women are tied up with care-giving duties.
