By 2041 some 5.38 million jobs will be at risk from automation in the industries and services sector in Bangladesh.
The joint study by the government’s a2i project and the International Labour Organisation showed that Bangladesh’s five key employment sectors (garment, furniture, agro-processing, tourism and leather) are most at risk.
The study revealed the garment sector could be the most affected by advancements in artificial intelligence and robotic process automation.
The garment sector employs 4.4 million workers and could stand to lose 60% of its workforce.
Automation also severely threatens the furniture production industry with 55% of workers potentially losing their jobs.
Around 600,000 workers in agro-processing, another 600,000 in tourism, and about 100,000 in the leather industry are also threatened.
At an event in Dhaka during a discussion entitled ‘4th industrial revolution’, policy adviser of the a2i project Anir Chowdhury said that the figures are expected to increase and that they were actually conservative numbers.
