Taiwan’s unemployment rate falls to 3.66% in November

Taiwan’s unemployment rate has fallen to 3.66% in November, 0.17 percentage points lower than a month prior and registering the fifth straight month of decline, according to data from the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).
The jobless rate for November marked its lowest since 2001, signalling that the economy is on a recovery trajectory.
The unemployment rate is expected to fall again in December as retailers are hiring temporary workers due to the holiday season, said DGBAS Deputy Director Chen Hui-hsin at a news conference, according to Taipei Times.
“Unemployment data nearly dropped to the level prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, but a considerable number of people are still working fewer hours,” added Chen.
The number of workers who worked fewer than 35 hours per week hit 229,000, which is 30,000 more year-on-year. After seasonal adjustments, the jobless rate in November recorded 3.71%, falling 0.13 percentage points month-on-month. The number of first-time jobseekers and workers who quit their jobs fell by 4,000 over the same period.

University graduates had the highest unemployment rate at 5.14%, followed by high school graduates (3.48%) and junior high graduates at 2.68%, highlighted the DGBAS report.
