Government called to upskill and reskill workers in the Philippines

To reduce job mismatches, the government needs to have in place more training programmes so that workers can keep pace with digital transformation.

This call was made by former defence secretary and Senate candidate Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro who said, “We need to prepare our workforce for the jobs of the future by upskilling and reskilling our employees to acquire new skills demanded by industries. Through training, we aim to bridge the gap and reduce job mismatch.”

Teodoro said the pandemic has accelerated digital transformation and resulted in technological innovations that require new skills “to continue meeting the demand for jobs of the future”.

Job mismatch issues can be addressed through reforming the curriculum, including setting up programmes to help students in acquiring in-demand skills and promoting life-long learning for those in the labour force.

“Training programmes will help our workforce to keep pace with the emerging demand for new skills. Acquiring new skills will also open more career opportunities for Filipinos,” he added.

Teodoro, who ran for president in 2010, is running for senator under the UniTeam of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, according to The Manila Times.
