In the intricate tapestry of professional life, transitions often mark the most profound periods of growth. For Dr Romina Santos Reyftmann, a human rights lawyer and a graduate from the University of Sydney, her career trajectory as a surgeon took an unforeseen turn when she learned of her pregnancy with twins.

This marked the genesis of a pivotal career re-evaluation, where self-awareness emerged as a guiding light.  “Honest self-assessment is crucial,” she told the University of Sydney while sharing advice for others navigating a career change. Acknowledging that one’s career often intertwines with identity, she noted the significance of aligning career choices with inherent strengths and current circumstances.

Reyftmann then engaged a career counsellor, whose guidance enabled her to identify her career strengths, interests, and goals. This empowered her to uncover career paths that aligned with her passions and offered unexplored possibilities. “My strengths were pointing towards social work, but I wanted something that was both hands-on and academic, where I could focus on a problem using a methodical and intellectual approach, so that’s how I arrived at human rights law.”

Mentorship and networking also played pivotal roles in Reyftmann’s journey. She sought mentors intentionally, leveraging their wisdom and forming valuable connections. “Finding the right mentor is about being intentional about where you want to be and not being afraid to ask for help,” she said. Utilising platforms like LinkedIn, she identified individuals aligned with her aspirations and created connections that facilitated introductions and opened doors that otherwise might have remained closed.

“Navigating a career crossroads might seem daunting at the time, but it’s also a great opportunity for growth and self-discovery,” she concluded. “By being honest with yourself, seeking the guidance of a career counsellor, and leveraging mentorship and networking, you can find the clarity and direction needed to move ahead on a more fulfilling path.”
