India’s urban unemployment rate falls to 9.8% in July-September 2021

The labour force participation rate in urban areas over the same period was 46.9%, down from 47.2% year-on-year, showed official data.

The urban unemployment rate in India has fallen to 9.8% in July-September 2021, showed data by the National Statistical Office. 

The jobless rate among female workers was 11.6%, while the percentage for male workers was 9.3%. The labour force participation rate in urban areas over the same period was 46.9%, down from 47.2% year-on-year, official data showed. 

The survey covered 171,000 people above 15 years of age, spanning 44,272 urban households.

“Due to the second wave of COVID-19, the field work [for the survey] was suspended from April 19, 2021 in most parts of the country. The field work was gradually resumed in the first week of June 2021 with due adherence to the COVID-19 related restrictions,” the ministry of statistics and programme implementation noted in a release.
