Indonesia urges regions to boost workers’ digital literacy

The Communication and Informatics Ministry is encouraging regional governments to boost the digital literacy of human resources in their regions.

“We need to have good human resources,” said Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate in a press statement after meeting with West Sulawesi’s governor, adding that there is a need to develop digital skills evenly across Indonesia.

“I request the attention of West Sulawesi’s governor and all governors in Indonesia. There is a digital literacy programme that we implement for 12.5 million people in 2021,” he said.

The central government is targeting for 50 million people to participate in the digital literacy programme until 2024.

West Sulawesi’s participation for this programme remains low with only 58,000 people from the province participating in digital literacy training, while the total number of participants for the entire nation stands at 12.5 million people.

The minister said everyone, including housewives, merchants, and youngsters, can participate in the Digital Literacy Programme.

This is so that if these people run MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), they can manage their businesses well with digital literacy, said Plate.

In addition to digital literacy, the minister urged regional governments to encourage their people to participate in the Digital Talent Scholarship and Digital Leader Academy. The former is for medium-level digital skills, while the latter is for upper-level digital skills, according to Antara.
