Firms in Japan can use internship evaluations in recruiting

Companies in Japan can now use internship evaluations to evaluate prospective employees as part of the screening process, the government said.

Previously, the government said that internship evaluations conducted before the end of May cannot be treated as part of the screening process, but has now allowed such appraisal in the hiring process. 

Companies will be allowed to use internship assessments on university students who completed their internships during the summer break of their third year, assuming a four-year course. At the earliest, this will apply to internships that will be held in the summer of 2023.

In April, the Sangaku Kyogikai, an industry-academic council, represented by the heads of the Japan Business Federation and national, public and private universities, had demanded in April that the government allow companies to use information on students gathered during their internships during hiring.
