India’s DMEO pushes for Gender Budgeting Act

India’s Development, Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) has called for a national policy for women and gender-based budgeting across all ministries through the formulation of the Gender Budgeting Act.
Women should be incentivised to participate in training and capacity building programmes to help India achieve gender equality with a special focus on areas like health, agriculture, environment and social inclusion, it said, reports The Economic Times.
India ranked 140 out of 156 countries in World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report in 2021, falling by 28 places. In 2020, India ranked at 112th place.
“Specific incentives for women can be provided for promoting their participation and a certain percentage of women’s participation may be mandated to promote gender mainstreaming,” DMEO said.

It also suggested that the government legally mandate all data-collecting institutions to analyse and publish gender-disaggregated statistics to reduce gender inequality in India through more targeted policies.
