Employment in Malaysia rises in 2Q2022

Malaysia added 3.2% more jobs, or 267,000 more positions, to its labour market over 2Q2022. Total employment hit 8.6 million over the period, from 8.4 million a year ago. The number of filled jobs over the quarter hit 8.4 million, with the proportion of filled jobs at 97.8%, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
The manufacturing sector posted the largest share of job vacancies at 55.9%, followed by agriculture (16.1%), the services sector (16%), construction (11.8%), and mining and quarrying (0.2%).
The highest number of jobs was created in the services sector, recording 52.5% or 15,400 jobs, followed by the manufacturing industry, registering 30.6% or 9,000 jobs, and construction, contributing 11.8% or 3,400 jobs.

Jobs in the semi-skilled category recorded the highest share of 62.2%, followed by the skilled category at 24.9%. The proportion of jobs created in the low-skilled category was 12.9%. Over 2Q2022, the number of filled roles in the skilled category hit 2.1 million, compared with 2.02 million a year ago.
