Twitter reverses work-from-anywhere arrangement

Having previously advocated permanent remote work, Twitter is now requiring employees to work a minimum of 40 hours per week in the office.

Twitter has ended its remote work policy following an email by new owner Elon Musk preparing them for “difficult times ahead”, in an email reviewed by Bloomberg.

Musk said there was “no way to sugarcoat the message” about the economic outlook and how it will affect an advertising-dependent company like Twitter. “The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed,” Musk wrote.

The firm will now expect its employees to be in the office for at least 40 hours per week.

Prior to this, Twitter had established a permanent work-from-anywhere arrangement for its workers. The firm also practised “days of rest”, a monthly, company-wide day-off introduced over the pandemic, which Musk has now eliminated.

Twitter has been under Musk’s leadership for close to two weeks, in which time he has dismissed roughly half its workforce and most of its executive suite. After laying workers off, Twitter reached out to ask some staff to come back, according to multiple reports. Sources had said that the company asked some employees to return as they were laid off “by mistake”, according to Bloomberg.
