Improving mental health across workplaces in Queensland

A new health and safety code will support workplaces in creating mentally healthy environments and address psychological health risks.

Effective 1 April 2023, a new work health and safety code has been implemented in Queensland, Australia, to enhance mental health in workplaces throughout the state. The new code, named “Managing the Risk of Psychosocial Hazards at Work Code of Practice”, will address psychological health risks at work, including exposure to traumatic events and isolated working.

Citing a national review that found many employers were unsure of their responsibilities in managing psychological health and safety risks at work, the Queensland government said the new code will provide practical information and guidance for organisations to create mentally healthy workplaces and advice on how to comply with existing health and safety obligations.

It will address psychological health risks at work, ranging from exposure to traumatic events to remote or isolated working, and will provide practical examples of managing psychosocial hazards in the workplace.

Grace Grace, Queensland’s Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations, and Minister for Racing, said, “Research has shown that employees benefit from psychologically healthy workplaces through better individual health, increased job satisfaction, commitment, positive attitudes towards self-development, and lower rates of work-related injuries.”

“That’s why we created the code—to protect employees, support organisations to have a greater awareness of what signs and symptoms to look for, and to provide a framework to minimise risks.”
