The metaverse can revolutionise workforce training, says Meta

The full potential of the metaverse will be realised within 10-15 years and will have a positive impact on the way people work, predicts Meta’s Nick Clegg.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) can play a transformative role in job training and education, said Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs for Meta, who added, “One of the most powerful applications [of AR and VR] is the ability to dramatically improve reskilling.”

Speaking at Meta’s Future of Work Summit in Washington, Clegg predicted that in 10-15 years, the metaverse would become sufficiently mature, affordable, and accessible to enjoy wide prevalence in society. Reiterating Meta’s commitment to develop the technology, he also highlighted the mutually reinforcing relationship between AI and the metaverse, saying, “One entirely reinforces the other. It’s impossible to imagine people enjoying the metaverse in the future without generative AI.”

With the advent of AI sparking global concerns about job displacement. Clegg positioned Meta as an advocate for technology that creates more employment opportunities rather than replacing jobs. Meta also welcomes the recent introduction of the Immersive Technology for the American Workforce Act in the US, with Clegg highlighting the importance of establishing guidelines through proactive rather than reactive legislation.

“I think one thing we’ve all learned over the last decade and a half is that it’s not great when you have technology erupt and then you have retrospective legislation,” he added, reported The Business Times.
