Gen Z employees in the Philippines, the youngest generation in the workforce, are prioritising financial stability and meaningful work that contributes to society, according to a study by Ateneo de Manila University. Born between 1995 and 2012, these individuals are motivated by personal achievement, financial independence, and opportunities for growth, while also valuing their ability to support their families and make a social impact.

Unlike Millennials, who tend to prioritise interesting work and collegial environments, Gen Z employees place greater emphasis on securing their financial future. Many respondents highlighted their desire to save and invest, reflecting their practical and future-oriented outlook. One participant noted, “I’m mostly thinking of my future; it motivates me when I am able to invest.”

The study also revealed the collectivist nature of Filipino culture, with many Gen Z employees expressing a strong sense of duty to their families. “My main reason is to help my parents as their eldest child,” one respondent shared. This balance of personal ambition and family responsibility underscores the generation’s unique workplace motivations.

Beyond financial concerns, Gen Z employees are driven by the desire to make a positive societal impact through their work. “I want to contribute to the people and the nation,” said another participant, reflecting the generation’s value-driven mindset. Researchers noted that this mission-oriented approach often surpasses the motivations of Millennials, highlighting a generational shift in workplace priorities.

The findings suggested that employers can better engage Gen Z employees by addressing their needs for financial security, career development, and a sense of purpose. Recognising these motivations can foster strong workplace commitment and improve overall job satisfaction, making this generation a key driver of future organisational success, reported Philstar.
