Singapore’s unemployment levels holds steady at 2.2% in April

The Ministry of Manpower expects unemployment to stay low amid a tight labour market and high demand for workers.

The unemployment rate in Singapore remained at low levels in April, at 2.2%, unchanged from the jobless rate in March. There were 72,400 unemployed residents in April, of whom 64,800 were citizens.

“As the improving economy continues to drive the demand for workers and hiring expectations among firms are positive, we expect unemployment rates to stay low amid a tight labour market,” noted the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

The resident unemployment rate was also the same as that in March, at 3%, while citizen unemployment fell slightly to 3.1%, from 3.2% the month prior.

However, the government noted downside risks such as prolonged global supply disruptions and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

From August 2020 onwards, Singapore began to publish monthly unemployment rates amid the pandemic. Previously, it used to release such data only on a quarterly basis.
