Indonesia prepares more digital talent for the workforce

Besides training digital talent, a stimulant programme also supports MSMEs in improving digital skills throughout their organisation.

This was disclosed by Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G Plate, who said the partnership is targeted to produce human resources with intermediate digital skills, including coding, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and metaverse.

Last year, 12.5 million people participated in the stimulant programme that the government had prepared through the ministry.

The programme has also nudged micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enter the digital ecosystem and have basic digital skills in four curriculum areas of digital skills, digital safety, digital culture, and digital ethics.

However, he said that the ministry’s efforts alone were insufficient, as Indonesia requires at least 600,000 digital talents each year.

“There are 9 million for the next 15 years, and the ministry can only prepare 150,000 to 200,000, maybe even less than that,” he said. To this end, the minister encouraged strategic parties to play an active role and participate.

“I invite Mastel and the Republic of Indonesia’s Informatics Telecommunication Ecosystem Family to cooperate to produce (talents with) intermediate digital skills,” he said.

In addition to digital talents at the intermediate level, Indonesia needs digital policy makers to be able to execute the smart city, smart island, and even smart village programmes, Plate said.

“Without digital policy makers, it would certainly be difficult,” he stated.

“Through our Digital Leadership Academy Programme, we prepared up to 500 seats in cooperation with the University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Oxford University, Harvard Kennedy School, Cambridge University, London School of Economic, and others,” he said, according to Antara.
