In times of crisis, an organisation’s response can significantly impact both its workforce and the surrounding community. Luz Mercurio, Chief People and Culture Office at Monde Nissin, highlighted the organisation’s proactive measures during natural disasters, such as the recent Typhoon Krathon, known as Typhoon Julian in the Philippines, and Hurricane Milton, which has made landfall on Florida’s west coast.
“Monde Nissin demonstrates a strong commitment of care with action when it comes to flexibility during crises like typhoons, which can disrupt both business operations and employee wellbeing,” Mercurio told HRM Asia. “Our People and Culture or HR teams take the lead in adapting work arrangements, ensuring that employees stay safe and supported.”
The Philippines-headquartered F&B conglomerate has established emergency protocols that prioritise employee safety while maintaining operational continuity. When a typhoon hits, the organisation swiftly implements flexible work options and provides essential mental health resources. As he elaborated, “The People and Culture team steps in to offer flexible work options and mental health resources, helping employees cope with the stress of such events.” This approach reflects a deep understanding of the dual impact of natural disasters on business operations and employee morale.

However, Monde Nissin’s commitment extends beyond internal support. The organisation actively collaborates with various groups to aid communities affected by disasters. For instance, it has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross to provide essential supplies. During Typhoon Carina in 2024, Monde Nissin also donated food and hygiene products to those in need. “Our efforts included providing canned goods and hygiene products to those affected,” he shared, underscoring the importance of community engagement during crises.
The ongoing challenge posed by Typhoon Krathon and Hurricane Milton serve as stark reminders of the importance of such initiatives. Typhoon Krathon was forecasted to receive more than 200mm of rainfall in regions such as Batanes and Ilocos Norte in the Philippines, while Hurricane Milton’s storm surge could drive water levels up to 12 feet above ground in Tampa, Florida. The flooding from these storms has led to loss of life and widespread displacement, making corporate responses to such disasters all the more crucial.
“By focusing on both employee support and community relief, Monde Nissin demonstrates how an organisation can be agile and compassionate in tough times. Our approach not only strengthens the workforce but also builds resilience within the communities we serve,” Mercurio concluded.
