The Philippine government plans to strengthen skills training in 10 key sectors, as part of its employment roadmap for 2023 under the purview of the DOLE.

The 10 key employment areas identified by the DOLE for the next five years are agriculture, health, tourism, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, information and communications technology, education, creative industries, energy, and construction.

To that end, it is currently working with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to equip citizens with the necessary skills to adjust to a highly competitive labour market.

TESDA will be setting up several innovation centres across the country, offering technical training programmes and specific courses in line with the requirements of different sectors, shared Carmela Torres, Labour Undersecretary, reported CNN.

The DOLE will also look into aligning the requirements of the education sector to groom young talents that can contribute to these growth industries, Torres explained.

In October, there were 2.24 million Filipinos who were unemployed, according to official statistics. However, unemployment numbers in October were lower compared to 2.5 million in September, and 3.5 million unemployed employees a year ago, in October 2021.
