Australia urged to regulate gig platforms

The Australian government has been called on to regulate gig platform companies to ensure that gig workers are recognised as employees, and that pay and conditions for them are improved. 

“Though some workers appreciate the flexibility to earn some top-up income, many are looking for ways out owing to dissatisfaction with low pay, fears for their personal safety and well-being, feelings of isolation, and a lack of viable career pathway,” said Elizabeth Straughan, a research team member who worked on a report by the University of Melbourne.

The study, which interviewed 90 workers and employers to explore the pros and cons of gig work platforms, also found that about 13.8% of working age people living in Victoria have taken gig work with such platforms, and 7.4% are currently doing so.

The report also highlighted that the gig economy is influencing how workers take up paid work, how consumers are engaging in personal services, and raising questions about workers’ rights and urban planning, reports Staffing Industry.
