Unilever trials four-day workweek in Australian office

Following positive results from its New Zealand office, Unilever is now extending its four-day workweek to employees of its Australian office.
Starting November 14 this year, the Australian trial will run for 12 months. Staff will retain 100% of their salaries, work 80% of the time and be expected to deliver 100% of business outcomes, said Unilever.
Employees will have the flexibility to choose which day or set of hours is most suitable for them to take off, and their plans will be aligned in collaboration with their managers. The new work arrangement will also involve less frequent but more efficient meetings, fewer emails and the adoption of technology such as MS Teams.
Nicky Sparshott, CEO, Unilever ANZ, said, “By removing project processes and protocols that add less value, throughout our week, we are able to free up time to work on items that matter most to the people we serve, externally and internally Bringing the trial to Australia is an opportunity to explore different ways to unlock more value for the team and the business across both markets.”

In its New Zealand trial, over 67% of workers reported a better work-life balance, with an improvement to individual wellbeing and stress levels falling by 33%. Feelings of strength and vigour at work also rose by 15%.
The four-day workweek is part of Unilever’s efforts to provide all employees with excess to flexible employment options by 2030.
