Global growth, simplified: Navigating cross-border expansion with confidence
- HRM Asia Newsroom

Global expansion is no longer the domain of multinationals alone. Start-ups and growth-stage businesses are increasingly seizing the opportunity to go global, and with good reason. Expanding overseas opens the door to new customers, diverse talent pools, and increased resilience in uncertain markets.
Global trends continue to favour cross-border business with digital infrastructure more robust than ever, remote work becoming mainstream, and the global workforce more mobile and accessible. Increasingly, business leaders are prioritising international growth as a core strategy, driven in part by persistent talent shortages in their home markets.
However, while the potential is massive, the journey is far from straightforward. The challenges of navigating unfamiliar legal systems, managing cross-border payroll, and staying compliant in multiple jurisdictions often hold organisations back from realising their global ambitions.

Speaking with HRM Asia, Eli Chuah, Senior Solutions Consultant for Asia-Pacific at Remote, identified the three most common pain points organisations face: managing payroll for an international workforce; sourcing the right talent with the right skills; and staying compliant with local labour laws, tax regulations, and employment standards.
Despite these challenges, the benefits of hiring globally remain compelling. Organisations gain access to specialised talent at competitive rates, enter new markets more quickly, and enjoy a significant competitive edge. According to Remote’s 2024 Global Workforce Report, 72% of organisations reported increased productivity after adopting a globally distributed remote work model. Chuah is quick to note that success does not solely entail expansion for the sale of expansion. “Scaling responsibly goes beyond growth,” she explained. “It means building systems that are sustainable, compliant and strategically aligned.”
Responsible scaling starts with a clear understanding of regulatory environments. Every country has its own set of employment laws, tax obligations, and compliance frameworks. Organisations that fail to understand these complexities risk costly fines and reputational damage. This is why more organisations are choosing to partner with global employment platforms like Remote.
Chuah explained that Remote offers a cost-effective and compliant pathway to international expansion, particularly in new or unfamiliar markets. Through its Employer of Record (EOR) model, Remote enables organisations to hire talent globally without the need to establish local legal entities. This not only saves time and money but also gives organisations peace of mind that they are fully compliant from day one.
One of the biggest operational challenges in international expansion is running payroll across multiple countries. Local payroll taxes, benefits administration, currency exchanges, and compliance requirements vary widely, making it difficult for even well-resourced organisations to manage effectively. “Handling payroll across countries is incredibly complex,” said Chuah. “This is especially challenging in places like Indonesia, where organisations face numerous localised hurdles.”
Remote’s platform solves these issues by offering a unified, compliant payroll solution that works across geographies. With automated calculations, on-time payments, and region-specific benefit management, Remote ensures a consistent and high-quality experience for both organisations and their global teams.
But payroll and compliance are just part of the equation. A truly successful international expansion strategy requires a people-first approach. Chuah emphasised that organisations must be intentional about building culture and values across all locations. “You need to make a deliberate effort to embed your core values into every location and team,” she said. “This helps employees feel connected and part of something bigger, no matter where they are.” Remote’s platform supports this effort by providing everything from onboarding to ongoing employee support in localised formats, ensuring that international hires feel just as valued as those at headquarters.
The future is borderless: Expand without limits
Rather than trying to scale everywhere at once, Remote encourages organisations to start with one or two strategic markets, particularly those where customer demand already exists or where there’s access to high-quality talent. From there, organisations can scale gradually, using early insights to guide future decisions. Whether a start-up is hiring its first overseas contractor or building an entire international workforce, Remote’s infrastructure and in-country expertise allow for fast, agile growth without compromising on compliance or employee experience.
Ultimately, expanding overseas is more than a growth tactic–it is a long-term strategy for resilience, innovation, and competitive differentiation. Several start-ups have already achieved global success with Remote’s support.
For instance, fluz, a Dutch AI start-up, scaled its engineering team by hiring specialists from around the world, ensuring access to top-tier talent regardless of location. Another German edtech organisation, simpleclub, successfully built a distributed product team, demonstrating that geographic boundaries no longer limit what teams can achieve. Meanwhile Tablevibe, a Singapore-based side project that has evolved into a global business, leveraged Remote’s solutions to reduce operational costs and navigate the complexities of hiring overseas with confidence.
Chuah concluded that global expansion is no longer reserved for large enterprises with deep pockets. “Remote addresses the challenges of scaling overseas by providing tailored solutions to hiring, managing, and paying employees internationally depending on our clients’ needs,” she said. “We also help look into specific challenges in every jurisdiction, with professional support from our local specialists across various domains, removing that burden from you entirely.”
