The HRM Asia Watch List 2018 (#hrmwatchlist), brought to you by Armstrong Craven, showcases the brightest next-generation HR leadership talent from across Southeast Asia.

In his 14-year HR career, Tony Tan has steadily built a cadre of HR leadership experience across the region, from Singapore, to Hong Kong, and now currently in Myanmar.

Tony Tan

Group Chief HR Officer, Jewellery Luck Group of Companies

Based in: Yangon

HR focus area: Transformation

Favourite aspect of HR: Impacting people in positive ways.”

Career-defining moment: “Overseeing a 15,000 strong workforce!”

As the Group Chief HR Officer of the Jewellery Luck Group (JL Group), Tan is spearheading an ambitious four-year strategy to completely transform the business – one which includes restructuring, automation for scalability, and commercialisation of in-house services.

JL Group is a Myanmar conglomerate that owns and operates businesses in hospitality, construction, and real estate, among other industries.

This latest role, which he took on in May this year, follows HR leadership stints at Munich Re, Willis, Aviva, and Prudential.

“I recognised how much impact I could make to the workforce of about 15,000 in a local conglomerate that is seeking to improve,” he explains.

“I saw the chance to help improve the lives of many colleagues and their families by helping the businesses become more successful financially and also to groom leaders who will take care of their staff and help make the company a great place to work.”

For Tan, reinforcing strong company values is as important as anything else that HR does. He hopes, in the next five years, to focus his efforts on grooming future leaders who practice virtuous leadership.

He is also looking to set up a non-government organisation during his time in Myanmar, to support the local community – a side project he takes on in any place he is based in.

The HRM Asia Watch List aims to showcase the up and coming generation of HR leadership talent in Southeast Asia. The list will be unveiled daily between September 27 and October 19, 2018. Check the dedicated archive for the latest updates, follow #hrmwatchlist on social media, or see below.
