Singapore firms and workers urged to adopt growth mindset

Upskilling requires effort and very strong commitment from both workers and employers to bridge the skills gap, said the manpower minister.

With emerging technologies that are driving the creation and requirement of new jobs, both workers and employers in Singapore have been encouraged to adopt a growth mindset to remain at the top of their fields.

“Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and big data, are driving the creation of new jobs that require new skills. These technologies also transform existing jobs throughout our entire economy,” said Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng, who was speaking at the DBS FutureForward Week event.

Workers “need to have the mindset that we are on a treadmill and we need to run faster and faster. We need to seize new opportunities arising from these emerging technologies,” he explained.

The minister highlighted that “mid-career workers have acquired valuable experience and transferable skills from their career journeys. With skills top-up, they can be effective in new roles”.

However, he noted that upskilling requires tremendous effort, and “it requires very strong commitment from both the workers as well as employers to bridge the skills gap”.

The minister also explained that upskilling does not apply just to those who are making a major shift in their job roles, but “all of us will need to constantly learn and upgrade to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving and accelerating technologies”.
