Turning crisis into opportunity: Transform faster, get digital now
- Shawn Liew
While the COVID-19 pandemic may have brought little cheer to many organisations around the world, it has at least forced many to re-evaluate their operational priorities.
Calling the crisis a “massive accelerator” for digital transformation, Laurence Smith, Chartered Fellow CIPD, and a thought leader in digital mindset and transformation, said, “One thing that is certain today, is that moving forward there will be less resistance to all things virtual and digital.”
In his new book, Transformation Mindset: 10 Things Leaders should be Doing Today to turn Crisis into Opportunity, Smith urged companies to quickly design, launch and iterate on initiatives to increase digital literacy across their organisations. This will help to generate confidence, experimentation and momentum, while encouraging and enabling transformation more organically.
He continued, “Move forward even faster. Explode out of the starting blocks when the new race starts. ‘Get Digital’ even faster. Work harder to develop the ‘Digital Mindset’ and capabilities of your leaders, talents and workforce even faster than the competition.
“Use this time now to increase their ‘Digital Quotient’ and ability to learn, adapt and compete in this new world.”
Over time, as the digital literacy of the organisation increases, things will start to spread of their own accord, predicted Smith.
Innovations will then occur unexpectedly, and will spread from a mindset/digital literacy concept to people fundamentally thinking about how to solve customer problems in new and unique ways by leveraging digital and data, he concluded.
