How human development can help lead the future of work

In his new book, Dr Bob Aubrey highlights the importance of human development as a professional field.

A career should not be limited to a job, suggested Dr Bob Aubrey, who has 30 years of experience in the field of human development and has an esteemed career as a teacher, entrepreneur, consultant, innovator, strategist and author.

In his new book, Human Development Careers: Leading the Future of Work, Dr Aubrey draws conclusions from recent research to show how moving across institutional boundaries is the new path to leadership and career success, and illustrates human development careers with profiles of professionals ranging from ages 28 to 75.

Dr Aubrey, who is also the founder of the ASEAN Human Development Organisation (AHDO), explained, “The reason I wrote this book is because none existed for careers in human development as a professional field… In writing the book, I came to realise that I had not confronted some important questions. What is human development as a career ecosystem?”

“What specifically drives human development careers? As companies already have a HR function, what makes human development different? Why is a mobile or slash career an advantage for success? What does a human development company look like? What is the future of human development for career professionals?”

In his book, Dr Aubrey further describes the growing ecosystem of human development in the future of work, and tackles the fundamental questions for today’s people professionals. The book asks pertinent questions such as why businesses are embracing purpose as well as profit; how the human resource profession being disrupted; what a human development company looks like; and how the human development profession might look like in 2050.
