India has made it mandatory for all IT and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies operating in the country to continue work-from-home (WFH) arrangements till at least December 31, 2020.

Making the announcement, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said, “DoT has further extended the relaxations in the terms and conditions for other service providers up to 31 Dec 2020 to facilitate work from home in view of the ongoing concern due to COVID-19.”

Under the DoT’s previous recommendation, WFH was supposed to end on July 31, which was an extension from the initial date of April 30.

For many of India’s top IT companies, it would be a continuation of the remote work arrangements that have been put in place since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TCS, Infosys and Wirpo, for example, have had over 90% of employees working from home, and are considering some form of permanent WFH model beyond COVID-19.

TCS is aiming to have 75% of its employees working from home by 2025, while Infosys intends to introduce a hybrid model, where their workforce is divided between WFH and the office.
